Ecuadorian fruits and vegetables on the way to expansion

Published on 13 March 2020

The portfolio of non-traditional Ecuadorian products benefits from the reinforcement of its qualities, resorting to the sustainable, exotic and premium.

Exports are the most efficient way to consistently generate economic stability for a country. In the Ecuadorian case, they depend mainly on oil, flowers, and bananas, but the tendency to commercialize more South American fruits and vegetables at a time when the rest of the global market is neglected, has allowed the portfolio to diversify and aspire to greater increase.

Regardless of fluctuations in demand due to the political or macroeconomic environment that affects raw materials, the quantities placed and the prices at which fruits and vegetables are sold are less volatile and manageable and depend on structural factors that may be planned. Beyond the climatic risk, visible in sensitive crops such as mangoes and bananas, agro-export is a stable bet for the generation of foreign exchange that will strengthen public finances and boost demand.

The following table shows the performance of the fruits and vegetables that stood out for their growth in 2019. As a particular detail, most of these are typical of the tropical zone and are produced under better conditions on the coast or high jungle Ecuadorians.

Among the cases shown, the advance of the tree tomato stands out. The increase in income generated is due to the authorization to enter the US market, since July 2018. It should be mentioned that up to now it is practically the only market to which this fruit has been exported, but progress in the first two years of exporting implies that it is a product with the capacity to capture the interest of consumers.

In general, the United States is the most relevant destination for the supply of Ecuadorian fruits and vegetables, especially in the case of mango, but there is variety in the countries to which other important products are shipped. Both Europe and Asia are prominent markets and represent spaces in which new products for these, such as tree tomatoes, can advance.

The fact that many of Ecuador's non-traditional products are considered exotic implies breaking barriers and creating new markets, but at the same time, it implies a special value that, if identified massively, can considerably increase Ecuadorian exports.

The commercial work is arduous, but it is worth facing the challenge of putting new products on the minds of consumers in remote countries. The fact of coming from the Andes and the Amazon, and a country with a high incidence of rural poverty, makes it opportune to take advantage of the drive to improve the quality of life of producers to reach the most demanding markets with certifications, such as Commerce. Fair or Rainforest Alliance, to which the organic is added.

In line with the above, Ecuadorian products are being promoted with the slogan Ecuador Premium & Sustainable, which seeks to show the qualities of the products and respect for producers. This is the type of action that shows the result of the joint work of producers and the government to achieve better yields, qualities, and environments, and which is expected to be reflected in increasing exports.
