United States promotes export of Peruvian pajamas

Published on 19 March 2019

The North American country is the main destination of the sleepwear produced in Peru. The textile tradition has allowed to take advantage of the demand.

The export offer of Peru is diversified with non-traditional products that advance in the different markets of the world. However, there are products that depend more on one or the other market, according to the requirements of consumers or buyers, and the possibility of satisfying them.

In the case of sleepwear, the historical abundance of cotton in Peruvian agriculture has allowed the development of a textile industry that, in recent years, faces the challenge of remaining competitive. In this way, the development of niches is one of the alternatives to overcome the challenge of facing the efficiency of Asian, Latin American producers, and the Americans themselves.

In this sense, one of the items in Peruvian production that has found an opportunity, is that of pajamas and gowns. The proximity between both countries allows expedited dispatches, save costs, and facilitate the supervision of the manufacturing chain. In this way, the United States has established itself as a market for Peruvian pajamas, but this could soon be replicated in other markets, such as the United Kingdom. In the following table, the most important countries are shown for the item, and the existing opportunity to advance in Europe and Asia:

It is worth mentioning that the development of the US market is recent. Until 2012, shipments to this country did not exceed one million dollars, and only the following year this barrier was overcome. Therefore, the United Kingdom opportunity, which exceeded the one million barrier in 2017, may also be the next to take advantage, followed by Sweden, the regional markets and Japan.

As for the means of transport, it should be noted that both sea and air are used. This is due to the low weight and size of the merchandise, the relatively short distance between Peru and the United States, the agility of the market, and the better preservation of the product. In the following table, you can see the distribution according to the route used.

On the other hand, it is important to note that the demand is predominantly female, especially for nightgowns and cotton knit pajamas. However, the experience of the Peruvian textile industry has also been used to make products with synthetic fabrics. In the following table, the main tariff items involved in the item are shown.

In general terms, Peruvian producers have managed to identify an opportunity to overcome the challenges of an industry that pays the cost of belonging to an open economy, and have seen in other countries the space to counteract the lost ground against Asian producers. This is a clear sign that entrepreneurs have the possibility of overcoming difficult conditions with strategies to take advantage of conditions such as those offered by the FTA with the United States, and the quality of Peruvian cotton fiber.
