Exports of Chilean salmon to China increase

Published on 01 August 2018

The increase in the quantity sent allowed the value of shipments of Chilean salmon to the Asian country to rise, despite the decrease in prices.

Along with the paper and cellulose derived from the forestry industry, salmon is the main export product of Chile, after copper. It is one of the main suppliers of this fish in the world, together with Norway.

Throughout the 12-month period, between May 2017 and April 2018, exports of this fish and trout grew 6% over the same period 12 months ago. Trout is included because although it is raised in fresh water, it is an almost substitute product and oriented to similar markets.

Among the main destinations, the two most important are countries with high purchasing power, such as Japan and the United States. However, China is becoming an important market and is growing considerably. Between May 2012 and April 2013, the value of shipments of Chilean salmon was only US $ 53 million, which means that it quadrupled five years later.

On the other hand, it is important to highlight the premium demand, which requires immediate delivery of the product. This is reflected in the importance of air shipments, especially for the Chinese market.

In general terms, the Asian giant generates an opportunity to mitigate the risks of a product subject to downward variations over offers. In this line, although it is always looking for new destinations, the dimensions of the Chinese market allow it to work on its own as a source of independent diversification, having several large cities with independent demands among themselves.
